Loch Garten osprey diary

The cameras are being turned off this morning

We are ringing the chicks this morning and will take the opportunity of an empty nest to turn the cameras off and give them a good clean. You will not be missing anything as the ringing takes place on the ground.  When the chicks reappear on the nest you will see not only their leg rings but also a little satellite tag on their back... this does not harm them in anyway. If you have questions about satellite tagging please go to http://www.rspb.org.uk/ospreytracking.

Any questions regarding this project which you feel are not answered by this page please send to david.gascoigne@rspb.org.uk ..and put in the subject title "OSPREY TAGGING". Questions posted via the comments page will not be answered.

There will be a catch up blog covering the week's events in a couple of days.

Until then......................

Thanks for letting us know about the satellite tags. This will be great because you can track our precious chicks and see if they arrive safely in Africa . I feel like they are part of my family. Also you will know if or when they return to Loch Garten. Good luck with the ringing. I hope neither EJ nor OVS see you with their babies and become upset.

Many thanks,David and team, for keeping us so well informed. This wonderful webcam has more than made up for the fact that just one pair of swallows arrived at my garden this year, and they didn't make it until the middle of May. I miss them so much. Hope ringing, tagging etc. went smoothly. As I age and travelling to reserves and other popular birding places becomes less frequent, the thought that I shall be able to continue what has been a life long source of fascination, learning and sheer delight, without moving too far from my home, is very comforting. Of course, television programmes are now excellant but somehow they lack the atmosphere, there is usually too much commentary and you can't respond in the same way. So my sincerest thanks to you all and the RSPB. Who's going to send the 'prize-winning' letter to the Mag.?

Goodness I dont envy anyone getting hold of those two big chicks bet EJ and OVS are going mad .  It is going to be great these next few weeks but oh goodness what will we do , I guess the hobby chicks will come just right but they will not be the same .  Hope all is going well and looking forward to seeing them later all ringed and tagged . The Osprey Tracking site is very informative. How exciting to be able to follow 'our' nestlings on what will be their most arduous and dangerous journey of their young lives.

Now we shall not be able to rest until they arrive safely in Africa, they have become such a big part of OspreyBloggers lives.

I'm not having any luck with the links : osprey tracking, join RSPB, and petition sign - I keep getting page load error: Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at uk.sitestat.com thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Can't wait to see them again and know what sex they are. Quite excited about it all. The twins are both such characters.

Maureen - thanks - excellent site! Did you see the clip of the water rail and chicks? Priceless!

While waiting for cameras to come back on line I went to www.roydennis.org and followed the wonderful migration of Logie, an Osprey that has been tracked last last year.

What a fabulous and interesting site and how fabulous are these Ospreys to fly so far and cross great deserts like the Sahara with all the dangers that involves just to come back to beautiful Scotland to mate..

Can I ask, will he be putting the Ospreys from the Loch Garten site onto his website for the Autumn migration ???

How exciting that we could follow them South to warmer climes..

When the chicks first hatched, I became a frequent visitor to the webcam. The constant "squarking" of the youngsters and the food calling of EJ became a trifle tedious, but I could not turn the sound off for the world! Now the microphone does not seem to be working, I am really missing it! Will it be turned on again?

Actually, aren't we fortunate - being able to complain about the sound of ospreys and the chicks disturbing our peace. Long may it continue.

REPLY..... Sound will be restored tomorrow when I get into the Centre
