Loch Garten osprey diary

Three is the magic number

Third chick has arrived..... don't know when the event actually happened, all I know is that we had an intact egg at 22.12 last night and when she went on an exercise flight at 10.31 this morning the egg shell was broken and three chicks were on the nest. As with the others, we are waiting for the first feed.

I will update with a progress report tonight.

We are P3 at Slaemuir School in Port Glasgow. We have been watching EJ and Orange for a few weeks now. We have just watched the third chick finally hatch on our computer in the classroom and we are very happy to meet him/her!

Note from Mrs Blair our teacher:-This is such a wonderful educational resource. Thank you RSPB for the three webcams giving urban children the chance to experience nature firsthand. I am sure their intense involvement now will lay strong foundations for their future appreciation of all things natural.

I thought I saw a third chick briefly around 8.30 this morning when EJ changed position and stood up briefly, then thought I had Maureen's 'sighting' problem. Well done EJ and OVS! Still a long way to go though. Lets hope we have three sucessful fledgings sometime in July.

As EJ was so fidgety last night I stayed up to watch. At 1.20am she jumped off the brood and moved the two chicks nearer the camera revealing what appeared to be the third chick and two egg halves. EJ fussed around a little then flew out into the darkness. Several seconds later her return was marked by a loud bang as she apparently collided with the back of the camera, appearing shortly after looking rather flustered to the right of the screen. She immediately gathered the chicks and settled....sort of. At that point I went to bed feeling quite confident that #3 had joined the brood. :)

EJ frantically food calling has the new hatchling been fed yet? I really have to go out...I don't think that I can use osprey web cam as an excuse not to attend a meeting, can I?? Just a few more minutes to see if VS arrives........no, go to go, bother!!

Congratulations to all the team and of course to EJ and OVS!!! This is a great result 3 out of 3! Hope that this chick will grow as strong as its siblings. I am glued to the screen from now on I cannot wait to see the new born...

Beautiful view of the family at lunch, all three looking good and strong. Our latest arrival looks to be feeding well, but I think it's older siblings are getting the lion's share.

The first feed - Halleluja! Little one pushed to back - hope it got enough! Poor thing fell over with legs in air but managed to right itself, thank goodness.

Congratulations Loch Garten and EJ. I have just watched mum delicately feed the 3 chicks and all look so well. Lets hope that they all survive and come back to breed here in the future. A really lovely sight that made me tearful with joy... Will be in to see them as soon as possible...

Just seen all three being fed, what a wonderful sight, OVJ doing his bit and mum so gentle. Bin the telly, this is so much better. Thankyou all at Loch Garten and the RSPB for making this all possible. I still watch Springwatch though.

On reading all the comments I see the chick had been there for a while when we first saw it about half 11 this morning. It must have been sitting on a bit of the empty shell as my kids and I were convinced it was just hatching. After their (and my!) huge excitement I will let them continue to think that's what they saw. We finish for the summer holidays in a couple of weeks but we will be checking on the ospreys, peregrines and goshawks till then.

Loively view of all 3 chicks just now.....I think EJ is letting them get some fresh air, while doing some very balletic stretches herself.

I was so excited to see chick no three this morning as it is my birthday today too! Saw OVS bring a fish in then dashed 100 miles from Kent to Hampshire where I live and where my computer has speakers so can listen at last I have been staying with my Sister and no sound there so its a treat to actually hear them now. Well done EJ, OVS and Loch Garten Team. We will be up in August to see them hope they will all still be there then.I've been glued since end of March to all this, nothings getting done but never mind this tops all else. from gsnowey!

At 8.35 pm, my two children and I sat down to watch the web cam for the first time in a while due to technical problems. We we amazed that the three chicks had hatched. We were delighted when we were able to see Orange VS come in with a big fish and very quickly disappear. I was slightly concerned at the little one at the back who did not seem to feed well. Maybe it is early days yet.

Many thanks to the team at Loch Garten for keeping us up to date. we really enjoyed visiting in April of this year.

As we have been without power today, we shall very much look forward to seeing number three tomorrow.  Well done EJ, such great news.  Alas not so happy at Loch of Lowes, as to date only one of the three have hatched and they were laid before EJ's eggs.  All looks very peaceful a little wiggle from EJ and one little chick saying goodnight, goodnight to you all at Loch Garten

Now that 'our' chicks have safely 'joined' us, we can have a good sleep tonight in preparation for the next few weeks of Osprey behaviour.....I am sure we shall all be amazed and amused at the their antics.....a taster of which we are getting from Springwatch and Simon King's 'tutorials'.          Aren't birds wonderful parents!!!

Amazing/amusing and we can add strange behaviour.......Called in on EJ and chicks at 5am (early bird and all that!) she was brooding/calling and looking better....due to the nicer weather no doubt. Had a look around her 'house' and saw....NO OPTICAL ILLUSION, a HUGE fish not being touched!!.... EJ flew away, came back 2/3 seconds later.....promptly picked up the fish, dragged it across the 'babies', walked round in a circle flapping her wings then settled on edge of nest to rip into her breakfast...... Gorgeous 'babies' started 'shouting' at her but she ate a good lot before feeding them.

Strange behaviour...or is it? How many more behavioural words will we be adding to our list?   I am sure the LG Team will explain all....as if they don't have enough to do!

I bet they just love us.....

Overheard from a 5 year old who was watching EJ feed the chicks..

' Where are their fruit and veg portions' !!! ' They don't have to eat them'

What do I say to that.????

Loving the action, EJ and VOS doing a great job and it looks as though all chicks getting plenty of food.

Ain't nature great..
